“phantasy (…) inevitability”

17.11 - 21.12.2018

About exhibition

These works depict fragments, intuitively selected at first, and subsequently arranged to excite syntactical tensions between what likely appear as grossly inappropriate mixtures. The presence or absence of representation - in short, what has “substance” for the symbolic imaginary by which significance is consummated - forms a driving motivation behind the production of the drawings brought together here. Reading, viewing, building, and reflecting are all durational capacities, and yet duration itself, as well as social, political, and individual agency in time and space, seems somehow compromised or deferred these days. Without wanting to understate the weirdness or (in)appropriateness of conflating these images and texts, the question nonetheless remains to what extent such representations have reality, not to mention how they might evoke, agitate, incite, disturb, or merely entertain. Additionally, the selection, modification, and translation of this material through an absurdly fastidious drawing process is in the interest of (re)inscribing a sense of time and presence, even if this must remain merely a shadow of lived experience or trauma. These works were sourced and produced from the perspective of a (white, male) US citizen, and hence were heavily informed alternately by US popular culture and politics, as well as its domestic and foreign policy. It is perhaps a central tragedy of our era that, despite this, the imagery may still resonate far beyond the borders of that single nation. Ultimately, the space between the motif and it’s “location” (or lack thereof), much like the increasingly fraught and apparently incommensurable spaces between each of us, could be considered the real subject of the work.
